UPMC's Outpatient Programs
Geriatric outpatient programs are available at UPMC Senior Care-Benedum Geriatric Center, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC St. Margaret. In addition, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC), UPMC's psychiatric hospital and UPMC Presbyterian offer special services for patients with memory disorders and late-life depression.
Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
UPMC's Geriatric Assessment Centers
Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is a way health care professionals
collect patient data. The assessment allows for an evaluation of the patient’s
health status and functional abilities in multiple areas.
CGAs collect the following data:
- Comprehensive medical history
- Comprehensive physical exam
- Screen of vision, hearing and mental status
- Medications
- Record of all past medical problems
- Social data and economic situation
- Social supports and psychological data i.e. depression screen
- Values and attitudes about medical treatment, resuscitation, living
will, power of attorney, etc.
- Social skills, acceptance of help
- Summary scales for function
- Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living
(Functional Status)
- Oral health status
- Nutritional risk
- Risk of falling
The above data is organized into a care plan which includes a monitoring
checklist of:
- Diagnosis
- Medications
- Nutrition, vision, dental, and hearing screening
- Continence and defecation
- Immunizations
- Cognition and emotion
- Sleep disorders
- Mobility and exercise
- Cooperation with care plans
- Advance Directives
