The majority of life care contracts offer residents unlimited, lifetime access to independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care with little or no increase in fees. While the services may vary from one CCRC to another, the fee primarily covers room and board. CCRCs attract a much younger population than other types of senior housing options and offer amenities such as golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, and sometimes specialized facilities for Alzheimer’s and hospice patients. CCRCs are regulated by the Departments of Health and Public Welfare. CCRCs have their own accrediting agency, Continuing Care Accreditation Commission, in addition to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission is an independent entity that accredits only those communities that meet or exceed its standards of excellence.
