Educators and Students
Nursing Programs
Students interested in nursing have a number of options. Licensed
practical nurses (LPNs) and registered nurses (RNs) usually
are trained at hospital-affiliated nursing schools; the length of
training varies but generally includes clinical experience at the
host hospital. Student nurses can acquire a bachelor
of science degree in nursing (BSN) from a university or college.
This generally involves four years of training with clinical experience
at selected medical sites. Many universities also offer master’s
level (MS/MSN) and doctorate (PhD) nursing programs. Certified
nursing assistants (CNAs) are trained at medical facilities that
need their skills. UPMC has several programs that include long-term
care experience.
