Educators and StudentsHigh School StudentsThe University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy The health care field increasingly demands highly skilled and knowledgeable practitioners who are well versed in the economical, cultural, and personal implications for patients and also understand the needs of rural, urban and under-served areas in the state. The University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) introduces an elite group of high school students to the world of health care each summer, emphasizing the health care delivery system, primary care, prevention, public health, career exploration, and healthy communities. As part of the school's curriculum, the University of Pittsburgh's Division of Geriatrics expands students' knowledge of issues affecting the health of today's aging population through a Concentration in Geriatrics track course. The University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) The UPHCSA is a four-week program held in June and July for 110 students from across the state who are interested in learning more about health care and health care careers. The program focuses on exposing students to the health care delivery system, learning about the importance of primary care, and understanding how to serve as a community advocate to address Pennsylvania's health care needs. Each student enrolls in one of the four areas of concentration: Geriatrics, Maternal Child Health, Mental Health and Public Health Program Description – Geriatric Concentration Over the course of the four-week program, faculty members of the Division of Geriatrics and related fields offer an in-depth look into geriatrics and aging through a variety of courses and sessions that include topics such as:

Following completion of the program, students gain a better understanding of the aging process and the need for communication and collaboration between older adults, families, health professionals, and community service agencies in both service and research efforts. An applicant must be a current junior in any secondary school in Pennsylvania at the time of the application deadline. Home schoolers are eligible.
