John A. Hartford Foundation Grant
Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine
The University of Pittsburgh has been name a Center
of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine by the John
A. Hartford Foundation, the only national organization to award this
designation. These Centers share a commitment to excellence in geriatric
clinical care, training, and research. Financial support from the Foundation,
which is matched by each university, allows for further development in
any of these areas.
At the University of Pittsburgh, the funds have been
used predominantly to support a new program called the Physician Investigator
Program. This program allows the University to develop tomorrow's researchers
by increasing the number of physicians participating in the academic
fellowship program, providing its faculty with development training,
and attracting
excellent clinical researchers to positions that will enable them to
complete the transition from senior fellow to faculty member.
Specifically,
the University has created a Clinician Investigator fellowship
track to promote the growth and development of academic geriatrician
investigators.
The fellowship combines:
- four years experience
- Master’s level didactics
training
- supervised research projects leading to increased
independence
- committed mentorship under a seasoned geriatrician
investigator and other content-relevant experts
- research opportunities focused preferentially on
geriatric areas characterized by importance, prevalence, and under-investigated
status
- University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University
faculty strengths increased level and duration of support to ensure
transition to independence
- experience in preparing a funded grant, ideally
a career development award from the National Institutes of Health
- “Instructor in Medicine” and
faculty member designations in the Division of Geriatric Medicine
during years
three and four
